Smart technologies can be used to increase the resilience of coastal communities against weather events of increasing severity and frequency. Our specialist water and wave overtopping tool – combined with GIS models incorporating data from sources including LiDAR, aerial photogrammetry and Ordnance Survey – generates 3D visualisations to communicate the effect that overtopping of sea defences will have on a community.
Meaningful visual information that illustrates the potential consequences of storms and tidal surges enables local authorities to take necessary preventative measures and ensure new assets are built in safe locations, or designed to withstand projected flooding events without exacerbating the effects of flooding on adjacent assets.
Visualising different flood scenarios in a format that is accessible to all means public investment to optimise defences and mitigate the economic and social impacts of flooding can be easily understood by residents and stakeholders and weighed against other priorities.
